I HEART A&L FUNDRAISER -- WE DID IT!

The A&L community really came together to show their support for our children and their teachers and raised a whopping $53,990 in collected and pledged monies during our fall fundraising drive!  Over 100 families donated to this drive. And the donations truly represented our diversity...while we had some four figure donations, a lot of the donations ranged from $10 to $200, with a good number at the $120 mark.  And a big thanks those of who also donated your time these past few months either in addition to your financial donation or in lieu of.  It's amazing what we achieve as a group when each of us individually does what we are able to!  See you for the spring fundraising drive (though the donation lines are always open DONATE ONLINE  http://goo.gl/7UgBSr or drop a check off in the purple mailbox inside the door in Room 309 or in the PTA mailbox.

A&L NYC Marathon Bake Sale / School Fundraiser

Nov 1

But please bake something beforehand!

The NYC marathon is November 1, 2015!  Every year A&L sets out hot coffee, cider and a variety of sweet and savory treats in front of Lucy Kutchins-Hamilton's house (4th grader), that happens to fall at mile 9 on The New York City Marathon route. We set up around 9:30am and keep it going until most of the runners have passed or until we run out of coffee. Each year we raise more and more money at this event, so please dust off those favorite muffin, scone and quick bread recipes and get baking. Of course, if you don’t bake, other store-bought items do well —  bagels with spreads (pre sliced and wrapped are even better), single-servings of bottled water, napkins, cups & lids, or milk, and sugar packs for coffee, are graciously accepted. Be creative, anything that we can sell to hungry and cold marathon viewers is welcome. Donated items can either be dropped off on Friday at school, or on Saturday evening or Sunday morning at the bake sale site. If for some reason you don’t feel incredibly compelled to donate items to the sale, please come purchase some breakfast to support this 4-figure fundraiser!

PTA Google Group Emails Missing?

Do you feel like you’re not receiving every email sent to the PTA Google Group?  We’re sending fewer than 5 per week so we suggest changing your settings to receive each email as it comes out:

  1. Go to https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/uaaalpa
  2. Click the My Settings button in the upper right-hand corner (The person with a gear on her shoulder)
  3. Click “Membership and email settings”
  4. Set your “Email delivery preference” to “Notify me for every new message”
  5. Click Save

School Lunch Forms

Every family is federally mandated to fill out the National School Food Programs Application.  In addition to determining lunch qualifications for our children, the application is also used to regulate the amount of State funding Arts & Letters receives for supplies such as books, classroom furniture and other resources.  If you feel you are not eligible for free or reduced-price meals, then check the box next to the statement, “I do not qualify for free or reduced-price meals” at the top of the form and return it to school to help ensure adequate funding for our school.

As an added incentive, the class that returns 100% of their lunch forms and blue cards first will receive a pizza party in their classroom.

Oct. 14, 6:00-7:30PM

The first PTA General Meeting of the 2015-2016 school year will take place on October 14 from 6-7:30 PM.   A strong and active PTA is critical to our school’s success, and, quite simply, we need you, your ideas, your voice, and your support.   Come hear about what’s ahead for our school community this year.  We will also have a guest speaker Jean Malpas, Director of the Gender and Family Project at the Ackerman Institute for the Family, speaking on gender diversity.  We look forward to seeing you on the 14th and to working with you throughout the year to make A&L the best that it can be.  See attached flyer for more info!

Childcare Information for PTA Meeting

The PTA is organizing childcare for the PTA meeting Wednesday 10/14/15 for grades K-5 at 6PM. Pizza will be provided and we will be capping childcare at 50 students. In order to make sure that we have the right amount of caregivers and that they plan age-appropriate activities, please let us know in advance if your child will be there by filling out the information in this link:  http://tinyurl.com/pvko8l8

The childcare will be provided at a cost of $5 per student.  Drop off and pick up will be in the GYM.

Get Ready, Get Set to Show Your Love!!!!!

The I Love A&L fall fundraising drive will take off on Thursday, October 15, 2015 and run until October 30, 2015 (or until we meet our $30,000 goal for this drive).  The I Love A&L campaign is the school's single biggest fundraiser and is how the PTA raises about half of its budget to support the entire school, its teachers and OUR children.   There'll be prizes and giveaways and other fun stuff. Stay tuned for more information and get ready to give, give, give!  Don't wait to wait? Don't have to. Make your tax deductible donation now online at http://goo.gl/7UgBSr  (it looks funny but it does work!) or drop a check payable to the Arts & Letters PTA in the purple PTA mailbox in the entrance to Room 309, or mail to Arts & Letters PTA, Mailbox Room 309, 225 Adelphi Street Brooklyn, New York 11205

Licenders Update

On Friday, we conducted our annual Licenders school wide screening. This preventative screening program, now entering its third year at A&L, has been a successful preventative maintenance program for keeping this city-wide problem at bay at our school.  At the screening, 24 students were identified with lice, some in almost every grade.  At the follow-up visit 5 days later, 50% of those students still needed further treatment.  Families need to be diligent in their monitoring and treatment plans to prevent the cycle from starting over continually at school.  Licenders will do additional free screenings at their salons for A&L families, please contact them directly for assistance.  www.licenders.com

Many thanks to our PTA for supporting this successful program financially and functionally, and to all of the parent volunteers who showed up and assisted: Dawn Babbush (organizer), Georgina Motolinia, Naomi Shrenzel, Kahlila Kramer, Nicole Tu, and April Burns.  Thanks also to the administration, staff and teachers with whom we couldn’t have done this work: Pia Micoli, Meg Crouch and Tanya Williams.  If you would like to help defray the cost of this effort with an additional donation, please add it to your donation to the I Love A&L campaign or drop a check into the PTA purple mailbox on the 3rd floor.

Lost And Found

The lost and found will be in the main office, (Room 304) this year.  We will do our best to bring all items that are left in the schoolyard to this lost and found each day.  Please try to label all lunchboxes and jackets, so that it is easier to identify and recover (NOTE:  See Mabel’s Labels info below!).  Because space is limited, at the end of each marking period, we will send an email reminder for a last chance to check the lost and found, then we will donate items that have not been claimed. Thanks for your help and support with this.

A&L Kids Need You (Yes, YOU)

Arts and Letters is a small school, and our success depends heavily on parents’ (that’s you) willingness to step up and give their time.   If you can, please find a way to volunteer.  We are still in need of class parents, and there are endless opportunities to raise your hand and take responsibility for important events and projects throughout the year – or just to bake something for the bake sale!  There are several calls for volunteers in this bulletin.  Or contact a member of the PA about how you can help make our school great.  Because we need you.  Not the other parent.  You!

Weekly Bulletin for September 8, 2015

A&L Bulletin 9-8-15

About This Bulletin!

Hi, fellow parents, and welcome to the A&L Bulletin.  Our hope is that this once-a-week Bulletin will replace many of the emails that have flooded parents’ inboxes in the past.  Of course, we’ll still need to send out emails at various times, but we’re going to try to send as much of this information as we can through the Bulletin.  For that reason, we hope you’ll make sure to read it carefully when it comes!

In addition, you can contribute items to the Bulletin if they are school-related, or if you think they would be of interest to the A&L community.  There will be a section at the end for community events, and I encourage you to contribute!

Fall Welcome Letters

By now everyone should have these. If not, contact your child’s teacher. (New staff emails are first letter, last name at artsandlettersbklyn.org  example: mcrouch@artsandlettersbklyn.org ) Classroom teachers will also have materials lists on the first day of school if you still need them. If you do not know your child’s teacher, contact Meg or Pia. Pia is pmicoli@artsandlettersbklyn.org

Class Parents Needed!

Class parents are incredibly important to our school, and it’s also a rewarding way to get involved.  If you are interested in becoming a Class Parent, a Grade Parent, or if you want to find out more about what this position entails, please contact Anna Azrieli at annaazrieli@gmail.com.

We are also looking for a Co-Class Parent Coordinator.  Again, email Anna about this very important position (You can be both a Class Parent and Co-Coordinator!  Why not?).

Class Parent Meeting 9/29 at 6:00PM.

For all class parents already signed up and anyone interested in learning more about becoming a class parent.  It’ll be a fun get-together and a chance to meet in person, swap ideas, and get tips from from veteran Class Parents.

First Day of School – Please Complete All Paperwork!

Sept 9

September 9 is the first day for all students.  Lunch forms, blue cards, and contact/dismissal forms should be returned by September 16th.  Forms will be available at school.

School Closings for September

Sept 14-15 (Mon/Tues):  Schools closed for Rosh Hashanah

Sept 23-24 (Weds/Thurs):  Schools closed for Yom Kippur and Eid-al-Adha

Busing

Busing will begin for students who were on the bus last year on the first day of school.

We have created a guide to help with questions around busing.  Please see attached document. If you are interested in having your child take the bus (and wondering if you are eligible for transportation services from the DOE), please see Ms. Williams in room 304.   For students that are new to the school or new to the bus, please allow for 2 weeks for the bus paperwork and bus routes to be solidified by the Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT).  Their number is 718.392.8855.

Lower Grades (K-4) Arrival/Dismissal Information

Arrival: School begins at 8:50 this year.  Students who arrive early can wait with parents in the hallways outside their classroom, eat breakfast in the cafeteria with Mr. Rivera, or go to the gym where Mr. Garcia will be supervising.  We are working to minimize the hallway activity in the time between 8:20-8:40, so we are asking that students go to one of these places where there is an adult supervising the space.

In grades K-1, families are welcome to participate in "family read" in the classroom until 9am in the first weeks of school.  This is a great way to help the transition for the beginning of the year and allow kids (and parents) to settle into the routine of the school year. At roughly 9am, teachers will provide a signal for the start of morning meeting circle, at which point parents will leave the room and let the school day begin.

In grades 2-4, we will be encouraging more independence, asking students to enter on their own at the start of the year.  Teachers will have clear supports to help them develop this routine in the classroom, and we appreciate parents' support in this process.

If students are late, they should come to the front desk in the main office to sign the late log.  They can fill their name into a pass to take to class.

Dismissal: School will end at 3:10. Families should wait by the signs for their classroom, so that the teachers can easily stand at the door to make eye contact with each family member/guardian as the student is released. If the student is dismissing from a different location (Art, gym etc), the teacher will leave a note on their door to inform parents/guardians of where to pick up their child. At 3:15, students that have not been picked up will be escorted by a staff member to late pick up in room 310 (the library), where they will wait with Ms. Micoli.  At 3:25, we will relocate late pick up to the main office. After 3:30, students should be signed out in the main office by the person who picks them up.

Dismisssal Form: To help with dismissal process, we will be sending home a brief form with each student, in addition to blue cards and lunch forms.  This form will provide the school information about who/what program will be picking up the student on a daily basis (for the first semester) and what individuals have permission to pick up the student.  This will really help us keep track of where students should be going each day, especially for students that have a lot of variation in their dismissal schedule.

5th Grade Arrival/Dismissal

5th graders will begin the school day with morning meeting in the gym. Students will enter the gym from the side doors in the playground and sit by advisory.  5th grade students will be dismissing out of the side doors onto the playground at the end of the school day. Families and caregivers should wait at the entrance to the school yard on Adelphi to connect with their children.

Upper Grade (6th - 8th Grade) Arrival/Dismissal

School day begins at 8:50.  All students enter through the side doors and head straight to the gym for morning meeting.  All students dismiss out the side doors to the playground when the school day ends at 3:10.

Support A&L Rewards

Please read the attached flyer to learn how you can give to A&L while you shop online at amazon.com, at Target (online or in stores), and even in the grocery store.  These incremental rewards can add up quickly for our school if we all focus our purchasing power!  Remember, cash back at Amazon and Target is on everything you purchase, not just school supplies, so please make sure to click through our ad every time you shop!

Or better yet -- set a bookmark!  tinyurl.com/AandLAmazon

Summer Bulletin

A&L SUMMER BULLETIN – 8/6/2015

Hi, A&L Parents!  We hope you’re all having a fantastic summer!  Here are the events that you should be aware of as we approach the new school year.

Fall Welcome Letters

The Administration has sent out Welcome Letters to A&L families for most grades - containing teacher assignments, class supply lists, and classroom volunteer dates (see below for exciting volunteer opportunities!). The remaining letters will go out on Aug 10.  If you have not received your letter by August 17, please contact Tiffany Pierre at tpierre@uaaal.org

Classroom Set-Up Help Needed

Sept. 3, 4, and 8 during school hours

A wonderful way to get to know your child’s teacher is to stop by the classroom and help set up the room during school hours on September 3, 4, and 8.  Stop by for an hour or all day if you are able.  If the building is locked, ring the bell outside and wait a bit. Someone will come!  If you have any questions please contact Tresa at tresatres@gmail.com.  And no need to let anyone know you are coming -- just show up!

Classroom Supplies

With your welcome letter, you’ll receive the list of supplies your child’s teacher has determined are needed for the school year (both for your child and the classroom).  We’re hoping to have bulk supply ordering up and running by next year, but in the meantime in the past class parents or other motivated folks organized bulk purchases by emailing their grade, asking who’s in, and ordering either through Amazon or another site like Staples if everyone in the grade agrees to move forward.  This is usually MUCH less expensive for each family than buying supplies individually.  If you purchase through Amazon, please don’t forget to click through the link on the A&L website or go to http://tinyurl.com/artsandlettersamazon22 so that 5% of your purchase goes to A&L .   You should be clicking this link every time you use Amazon – not just for school supplies.

First Day of School

Sept 9

September 9 is the first day for all students.

Kindergarten Orientation

Sept 10, 9:00AM

Kindergarten Orientation will take place on Thursday, Sept 10, at 9:00AM in the Auditorium.  See you there!

Class Parents Needed!

Class parents are incredibly important to our school, and it’s also a rewarding way to get involved.  If you are interested in becoming a Class Parent, a Grade Parent, or if you want to find out more about what this position entails, please contact Anna Azrieli at annazrieli@gmail.com

Curriculum Night

Sept. 16, 6:00PM

Curriculum night will take place on Wednesday, Sept 16 at 6:00PM.  During curriculum night, you and the other parents in your student’s class will meet with the teachers in your student’s classroom, where the teachers will explain what our children will be learning and what their expectations and approach will be for the year.  Teachers will also answer questions at Curriculum Night.  It’s an important opportunity to be active collaborators with our children’s teachers.  We urge you to come!

PTA General Meeting & Book Swap

Oct. 7, 6:00-7:00PM

The first PTA General Meeting of the 2015-2016 school year will take place on October 7 from 6-7pm.  Childcare will be provided and we’re having a book swap where you can pass along favorite books to others and pick up new ones.   Keep an eye out for our childcare sign-up sheet (only the first 50 requests can be accommodated). A strong and active PTA is critical to our school’s success, and, quite simply, we need you, your ideas, your voice, and your support.   We look forward to seeing you on the 7th and to working with you throughout the year to make A&L the best that it can be.

Amazon/Target Cash Back Program (for ALL purchases)

Many of us make purchases through Amazon.  If you do, your purchase can help fund A&L for FREE.  All you need to do is click through our website link before you shop (or use the link below).  This is good for EVERYTHING you purchase on the site, not just school-related items.  Please save the link in your browser or favorites so that you never forget to click through when you shop.  Otherwise, it’s just leaving money on the table.

Also, if you have a Target RedCard, you can designate A&L to receive a percentage of your purchase. You can sign your card up from here http://www.target.com/redcard/main  Or if you sign up for a new RedCard, please designate A&L when you do.

Summer Reading/Math

Many teachers assigned reading and math work over the summer, and many others encouraged it.  Please make sure your student is keeping up over the summer, so they can come back ready to learn!

School Closings for September

Sept 14-15 (Mon/Tues):  Schools closed for Rosh Hashanah

Sept 23-24 (Weds/Thurs):  Schools closed for Yom Kippur and Eid-al-Adha
